My Kindle Promotion Results – Thank You!

During our most challenging struggles it can seem like no one is there to help us. The loneliness seems to intensify when one carries much responsibility on their shoulders. What I learned is that support was always there when I truly needed it, not necessarily when I thought I did. Sometimes, our loneliest, most painful times occur during a phase when we learn to expand ourselves beyond our own expectations. This lesson reiterated itself over the past two days during my free promotion for CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil. My online friends banded together and showed me immense support that greatly contributed to its success. Here are my results (click image to enlarge):

Within hours of starting the promotion, my novel soared to the top 50, then the top 20. By Wednesday evening CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil had claimed the #4 spot in the contemporary fantasy category. The following morning it reached #2 in the category and #9 in science fiction!

CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil also reached the #8 and #12 spots in the UK in the contemporary fantasy and science fiction categories, respectfully.

Again, whether you helped me spread the word about my special promotion or downloaded a copy, I extend my sincerest gratitude to you. Thank you so much!

Early this morning, CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil returned to its original price of $2.99, which is still a great deal, considering the incredible journey it contains. Then again, I’m the author, so I guess my opinion is somewhat biased. To those who have already downloaded their copy, I guess you’ll be the judge. To those who haven’t, I’ve created a free five chapter PDF sample so you can decide whether or not to explore the astonishing world that awaits you.

My Leap Day gift to you!

Hi Friends!

In honor of Leap Day, the Kindle edition of my sci-fi/fantasy novel, CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil, is now available FREE on Amazon through midnight tomorrow, March 1st!

Click here to snag your copy.

Here’s a brief description:

“Follow your heart, but allow your mind to refine your path.”

This is the mantra Camile Leon must live by as she explores a civilization beyond the one she’s grown accustomed to. As she trains to steer a pending war that will affect her native and adopted homelands, she comes to the unsettling realization that her own mind is often unfamiliar territory. The heart and mind are said to be one’s moral compass, yet the unfamiliar thoughts and dreams Camile experiences make her wonder where they are leading her. The answer not only threatens to shatter her world, but also the lives of everyone around her.

The official synopsis:

Seeing beyond the veil means seeing beyond what logic dictates and what others believe.

As Camile Leon becomes engulfed in the mysteries on the other side of the veil, she learns the astounding truth of its significance to the world’s vitality. Furthermore, she comes closer to understanding her pending role in steering upcoming events to either elevate or destroy humanity as she knows it. As time elapses, the woman in the mirror becomes tinted with a disturbing haze of unfamiliarity. The recent emergence of abdominal scars trigger memories of a past littered with deceit, abuse, seduction and betrayal. This leads Camile to question not only whether she can trust the people appointed to train and assist her, but also her own moral fiber. Doubt is sometimes a paralyzing force, but in Camile’s case, it could result in a cataclysmic chain reaction…

…with humanity in its path.

Review: A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard

When I first read the news of Jaycee Dugard’s remarkable liberation from her eighteen year captivity, several things went through my mind. I was happy for her and her family, but it was a bittersweet joy as I was left wondering about the long-term effects such an ordeal would have on all the innocent parties involved. I’m probably not the only one who considered whether or not Jaycee had been broken by nearly two decades of suffering at the hands of a maniacal, self-absorbed madman. I’d later receive my answer, first via Jaycee’s ABC News interview with Diane Sawyer, then in her memoir; A Stolen Life.

In some ways I feel A Stolen Life is Jaycee’s valiant stand against the diabolical oppressor who controlled her life since childhood. It is mentioned in her memoir that he didn’t approve of her writing things down, so her brave decision to pen this book is poetic justice and a testament to the integrity of her spirit. With her words, she destroys the smoke and mirrors he’s used to deceive so many people for far too long. Some excerpts make it obvious that the words were emanating from the innocent soul of a young girl whose interests and hobbies mirrored some of my youthful aspirations. Yet other passages contrast her dream-filled entries with seemingly endless dark clouds of injustice.

I’ve seen other reviews referring to Jaycee’s repeated entries about the various pets she kept while in captivity as ‘redundant’ and ‘unimportant’, but on the contrary I believe her furry companions were an important escapism. Caring for pets was the final attachment Jaycee had left of her identity, especially since she was robbed of her own name, among many other things. Having pets gave her some sense of normalcy and I believe it helped preserve her resilience during her eighteen years in hell.

At times, Jaycee’s story was very difficult to read due to the unflinching recounting of the nauseating atrocities Jaycee had to endure. I found myself shedding tears several times while reading of her ordeal. Not only was she held prisoner and forced to learn about life and sexuality through the skewed perception of her vile rapist, but she was forced to give birth—without proper medical care—to two children fathered by him. Still, I reminded myself that though I had the freedom to turn away at anytime, Jaycee wasn’t granted such merciful luxury.

Remarkably, Jaycee managed to keep it all together. She is a true survivor in every sense of the word. Though her mind and body were under tyrannous control, her spirit remained unbroken and determined to protect what she held most dear—her children. The payoff is that there is a happy end to this otherwise tragic story. Upon completing the final page I was left inspired. Even in the midst of darkness, Jaycee was able to find strength and love and used them as a means to survive inconceivable horror and despair.

As some readers have pointed out, the book is often written in simplistic language and is somewhat choppy and rushed in places, but in all fairness, I think the author did well considering her level of education at the time it was written. A Stolen Life may not be for the squeamish, but it’s an intriguing glimpse into the heart, mind and soul of an inspiring survivor who is determined to not only heal herself and her family, but also others who have suffered the pain of abduction.

A Stolen Life is available in print and digital formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other book retailers.

There’s No Telling When You’ll Fall

The heart isn’t sentient. It’s merely an organ that works 24/7, fueling the body with plasma, unaware that the mind superimposes idealistic fantasies of a thing called love upon it.

Love. Some revel in its intoxicating delusion, forsaking all logic and blaming it on the oblivious heart while the mind grows weak.

Love. A mystical and illusive creation, but created by whom, and why? I searched endlessly for the answer to this cruel puzzle, vowing to break the world free of its deception.

Yet, in my pursuit I was blindsided. First with a smile, then with genuine friendship and trust. I found myself falling beyond my arrogant perception of what I believed to be real and into the wondrous arms of truth. Furthermore, the skipping of my heart leads me to believe that it, too, is aware of what’s developing.

Love, my love, has found me. It isn’t fictional. It was waiting for me all along, I was just too blind and stubborn to see it. Yet, love and time are such remarkable forces that when they merge together, there’s no telling when you’ll fall under their joint influence.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love

I originally wrote this for my blogger account in February 2010. I believe it still applies.

The spirit of Valentine’s Day is a noble one. However, such an outpouring of love and affection should not be reserved for one day alone. Every day presents the opportunity to take the love we have within and spread it just as easily as we would any other emotion. The magic and wonder of it extends beyond the designated day of ceremonious romance filled with the dazzling adornment of gems, flowers and candy. Love and romance, though associated with the aforementioned, does not depend on the physical.

Love and romance are not governed by a set of rules that say you must act in accordance to a specific ritual to express them. When the commercialization of the day has been peeled away, we are reminded of something timeless—the presence of love itself. Love holds no set time for dashing away on an adventure into the land of dreams. It does not dictate when or how you should dance on a moonbeam to your heart’s content with the one you love, even if that person is yourself. Love operates on its own time, so it seems impractical to try to contain it within the confines of a single day. It is much too vast and powerful to remain restricted. And so, it is no wonder that we are sometimes inconvenienced when it spills out of the cell to which we’ve designated it, flooding weeks, months and years, interfering with our carefully laid out plans.

Love is not always convenient or easy. In fact, it can be downright scary when we find ourselves engulfed in the unpredictable grip of its tide. However, it is certainly always worth it since love has the remarkable ability to heal the spirit and unite the divided. To some, love seems elusive and unattainable. These illusions distract us from the truth—that everyone has the capacity to give and receive love. However, finding it seems challenging because it seamlessly camouflages itself within the unlikeliest of places in our lives.

Cat-snip

I originally wrote & posted this for my Blogspot account in March 2010.

Five years after my husband, Max, and I got our cat, Bazik (aka Bazilio), we finally came to the point when we could no longer put off having him neutered. The first four years were tolerable, but Bazik’s temper was quickly becoming unmanageable–I have many a scar to prove it. He always preferred to hang out with my husband rather than me, which is probably why we disagreed over the procedure for some time–I was for it, he was against it.

Although I’m 5′ 6″ and…I won’t say how many pounds, it was becoming abundantly clear I was outmatched by this nearly 2-foot, 16-pound feline beast. One day, after enduring a particularly maniacal attack, I vehemently decided that this 4-legged ankle biter had tasted my blood for the last time. After careful research, I found a vet and we headed off to the appointment.

The environment was clean and the staff was professional. Max and I took notice of the prominent sign which stated: PLEASE KEEP YOUR CATS IN THEIR CARRIERS. We half-joked that its placement was the result of prior chaos in the waiting area. When we were called I couldn’t help but feel concerned for the doctor and her assistant since they were both about a foot shorter than me and didn’t have a whole lot of body mass to them. Then I noted there was a 2 to 1 ratio and figured it would even out since the two women had each other for backup. I was surprised at how Bazik allowed the doctor and assistant to place him on the table, pet him and perform the superficial examination without any major fur flying through the air. Perhaps this isn’t going to be as bad as I thought, I figured. Then they brought out the thermometer and proceeded to take his temperature from his second business end. That was the plan, anyway. In a split second, my cat went from the male version of Hello Kitty to the feline equivalent of Cujo. He made it abundantly clear he was not willing to become anyone’s bitch. He lashed out, prompting the veterinary staff to resort to Matrix-style evasion tactics. And, just like that, Bazik quickly dispelled any suspicion I had of him being homosexual. From a safe distance, Max and I attempted to calm him down, but Bazik wasn’t hearing any of that. Seeing that taking his temperature would be impossible without risking life and limb, the doctor decided to skip it. Bazik, however, was still pissed and voiced this fact with a barrage of hisses.

The next part of the checkup was to take a blood sample. I knew that would be an impossible task. I told the doctor: “I think he’ll take your blood before you take his.” She agreed. It was decided to take his blood once he had been knocked out for the procedure. Max and I were told to return in a few hours to pick him up—by then, we were told, the drugs would have mostly worn off.

During this time I felt guilty about the whole thing. Maybe it was the fact my husband and I were dining at an Italian pizza shop while our beloved cat was losing his meatballs. I really love Bazik and didn’t want him to go through such stress, but we were left with no other choice. When we returned to the vet, we noticed the doctor was no longer wearing her hair out. It was tied in a high, messy bun and she looked as though she had been to the gym. The doctor who had performed the procedure was now wearing fresh bandages on his hand that weren’t there when we had left. There were a couple of other pet owners who had come and gone, inquiring about their companion’s behavior, to which the doctor gave answers such as: “She was a little nervous, but did well” and “Oh, he was very well behaved!” When it came time for us, the doctor’s smile faded. In as polite a way as possible, she said Bazik “…was a challenge.”

Finally, he was brought out. As we looked into his carrier we could see he was obviously still loopy as he swayed his head like Stevie Wonder and staggered around like Captain Jack Sparrow. Immediately after Bazik’s recovery, Max and I noticed an immediate change in his behavior.

Two years later, he’s still as active as ever—perhaps even more so—and he now naps on my lap frequently (something that was once unheard of). Every now and then he still eyes my fuzzy slippers, blankets and robes, no doubt reminiscing about the salacious times he used to spend with them. But he still seems puzzled as to why he no longer gets beyond second base.

MISTAKE – Making Incremental Steps Toward Advanced Knowledge & Excellence

No one enjoys making errors. Yet, some are able to handle their missteps better than others. I must admit, I was infected with disease that is perfectionism early on. It festered as I entered environments that were highly demanding and was often ridiculed the very human trait of making mistakes. It took years to identify my affliction and to notice that my greatest pressure was often self-inflicted. I also realized that mistakes are part of growing and learning so as long as the same ones aren’t repeatedly made. Life doesn’t always offer guidelines and sometimes it’s necessary to step into the unknown. With that, comes the chance of erring, but without taking that chance of stepping beyond our current state, we’ll be forever paralyzed with fear.

Great news for Kindle readers!

For a limited time, you can read CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil on your Kindle for just 99 CENTS!  From now until February 9th, you can begin the adrenaline-inducing journey of a torn woman with an ominous past that threatens more than one civilization. A story of this magnitude is sure to linger with you long after you complete it.

People in my inner circle think I’m crazy for working my tail off for nearly four years and pricing my work at under a dollar, even if it’s only temporary. I guess they have a point since typically when people work, they’d like to get paid for their skills and services, not to mention overtime. Hopefully, you’ll accept my humble invitation to join the world I’ve built for your exploration and amazement. I’d like to think that when you finish the journey you’ll think to yourself:“Shykia’s people are right, she really IS crazy for pricing her work so low, but I’m glad she did!”

As I write this, I’m beginning to wonder about this pricing thing. Might be a good idea to take advantage of this deal as soon as possible. You never know when I’ll come back to my senses. 😉
