Barnes & Mo’ Bull.com — UPDATE

On March 2, 2012, I noticed that my newest novel, CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil appeared incorrectly on the Barnes & Noble (B&N) website.

I sent an email request to BN.com requesting the following:

  • Correction of the synopsis for CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil (ISBN-13: 9780985044800) since B&N somehow had the synopsis for my 1st book, Camileon (ISBN-13: 9780595486076), listed for both novels.
  • Removal of the Camileon (ISBN-13: 9780595486076) NOOK link from the CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil (ISBN-13: 9780985044800) listing since there is no NOOK file created from the latter title.

B&N responded with an email stating that I should contact CreateSpace (the company through which I published my latest novel), who insisted they had the correct information on file—something I was able to verify through their database as well.

Several phone conversations ensued with various BN.com staff who repeatedly insisted that the problem was not on their end, despite the fact that it was only BN.com that had incorrect information. Clearly, these representatives were about as present in the discussion as vacant-eyed first graders at a quantum physics class.

Seeing that I was getting absolutely nowhere with BN.com, I contacted CreateSpace again, hoping they could do something from their end. Luckily, they were able to get B&N to remove the link to the file incorrectly listed under my second book and I waited patiently to see if the synopsis would be corrected thereafter. It wasn’t.

So, I contacted CreateSpace yet again and informed them of the situation. I just needed the synopsis to be corrected and everything would be fine. The representative mentioned resubmitting the information to the Ingram database in hopes that B&N would then download the information correctly. The downside, my novel would be unavailable from BN.com for up to 6 weeks while the changes took effect. Thankfully, it only took a couple weeks at most. Yesterday, I decided to take a peek to see if it was updated. I was thrilled to see the correct synopsis for my second book! My reaction:

YAY! Oh, wait… Why does my second book now have the SAME title as my first? And WHY the hell does my first book have the same synopsis as my second? WTF? They put the link to my first book’s NOOK under the second one again?! HULK ANGRY!

To say I was angry is a gross understatement. After I composed myself, I decided to send a final email to BN.com before filing a formal complaint. I even suggested that they refer to their competitor’s website to help them figure out how to correctly list my titles since they’re having such a hard time following simple instructions. I also mentioned that if the situation isn’t resolved soon, I’d have no other choice than to get the BBB involved.

Since sending the email very early this morning, I have yet to receive a response from B&N. Curious, I decided to take a look at both of my listings this afternoon to see whether or not anything had changed. I was surprised to see that the description for my first book was corrected. Unfortunately, the synopsis for my second book was changed to match and the incorrect NOOK link is still there! Needless to say, I’m in for an interesting Monday morning.

UPDATE 5/22/12 — At 10:30 AM on Monday, May 21st, I received an email from a B&N representative, in response to the message I sent on Friday (in which I stated I’d contact the BBB if the requested changes weren’t made within the following 2 business days). The representative stated that the changes had been made, but to notify her if anything had been missed. In fact, though nearly everything had been corrected, the synopsis for my 2nd book, CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil(ISBN-13: 9780985044800), had somehow been changed to match Camileon (ISBN-13: 9780595486076).

I immediately replied with this information and suggested she keep an eye out to be sure that the system wouldn’t alter anything else while making the final amendment. Since sending the email yesterday afternoon, I hadn’t received a reply as of midday today (Tuesday). So, I re-sent the response at 12:28 PM this afternoon. Great news! I took a peek at the site at 3:09 PM and was relieved to see that the listings for both titles were correct!

I’m FINALLY done with the dizzying runaround! It’s disappointing that I had to resort to threats in order to see some results, but I’m glad I didn’t have to file any formal reports and that the situation is finally resolved! The ironic part about the whole thing is, I was initially told by B&N that the problem wasn’t on their end and only the company I used to publish my work (CreateSpace) could resolve the matter; but I wound up working with B&N directly in order to get the job done—all before the deadline I proposed. Well, what do you know! Mo’ bull exposed!

Brain Child

My latest drawing. Click image for a larger view.

You lurk behind closed eyes, a vibrant force of creativity. Come forth and roam free, my brain child,

Don’t let my boundaries become your prison.

Revel in the vast space of your unrestricted playground.

Slide leisurely through my synapses, igniting the passion that fuels my spirit.

Run wild with the colorful ribbon that threads my imagination.

Don’t worry about the harsh realities you see beyond your windows.

I will keep you safely tucked away, nestled in the warm blanket of my fortitude.

I will fight for your survival, even if it means enduring scars of ridicule and doubt.

Someday, you’ll have to venture out into the unknown world,

but I’ll do everything in my power to ensure that you’ll be ready for the transition.

Until then, just play, just grow, just be…

12 Lessons Learned

“I’ll put my heart and soul into my novel, work hard to get an agent, and everything else will fall into place. It won’t be easy, but everyone I know will be rooting for me.”

That’s what many aspiring writers think.

I was one of them.

It wasn’t long before reality hit me head-on.

When I started out on my literary journey nearly five years ago, I naively assumed mostly everyone I knew would back me up. Sure, there were those who said they believed in me, but their actions proved otherwise. People grew distant and soon the only sounds of encouragement I heard were from a few loyal supporters and the echoes of my inner ambition. Even so, I consider myself one of the lucky ones since there are so many artists who receive no support at all.

A long, tumultuous road usually occupies the distance between an individual and their success. The arts in particular have always been considered frivolous compared to other industries, yet with so many people clamoring for the limelight, it’s also among the most competitive arenas. It’s also one of the few fields where it’s legal for a writer to spend years slaving over a product only to receive less than a dollar for each year worked (if even that much). But, I digress…

Over the years I have been humbled and have learned many hard lessons.

Here are some things I wish I knew going in:

1. Be prepared to do absolutely EVERYTHING yourself (especially if you self-publish).

Everything? you might ask. Well, virtually. I know I’m pulling back the curtain by admitting this, but contrary to outward appearances I don’t have people handling these things—neither do some of my fellow authors. In addition to writing and conducting research for my work, I also do the following:

§  Web design for my author and book websites (the latter is still in progress)

§  Print book layout and digital conversion

§  Cover design

§  Designing promotional materials (press kit, bookmarks, business cards, posters, etc.)

§  Marketing/networking

When do I find time to sleep? Rarely.

2. Don’t expect people to care about your dream as much as you do, if at all.

3. Your success is your responsibility. Quitting will not help you achieve it—it’ll only prove your doubters right.

4. You may be faced with a decision to choose between friendship/family and your career ambitions. Choose wisely. Always keep in mind what you’re willing to sacrifice or compromise. Try to find middle ground whenever you can.

5. Genuine help is rare. Appreciate it whenever you receive it and always express your gratitude.

6. Everyone has bad days. A little complaining is okay when it’s due, but only in moderation—and never let it impede your progress.

7. The higher your goals are, the steeper the hill and therefore the more exhausting the journey. Don’t expect to get there overnight and don’t overexert yourself.

8. If you cannot afford to purchase certain necessary services to support your endeavors, expend time to research and learn the skills to do them yourself if possible.

9. Find author/writer groups on social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Goodreads. Pay it forward whenever possible. Don’t just ask for help, give it as well.

10. Chances are, you’ll have to work at your dream for years without making a cent of profit. If anything, you’ll have to shell out money to get started (especially if you plan to publish independently). Still, this fact has nothing to do with the level of your talent. It’s just business, and business is rarely fair. Talent doesn’t guarantee success, no matter how great it may be. Fact is, there’s a degree of luck and social intellect that comes into play. That said, if you’re planning on writing full-time, make sure you have a stable way of maintaining your basic needs; you know, food, clothing and shelter.

11. Closed mouths don’t get fed. It’s okay to ask for help when you really need it. Sometimes, people will assume you don’t need assistance because you don’t appear to be struggling. Still, always do what you can for yourself first, or at least try. Sometimes you’ll surprise yourself and there’s a certain type of pride that comes with the ability to say: “I did it, myself.”

12. No matter what, keep writing, keep learning and keep growing!

It’s very demanding, transforming one’s ambitions into reality. Yet, if your desire is to leave a mark of your most genuine self on the world, it’s worth the attempt. At least it is for me. In the years prior to embarking on my literary journey I worked for organizations and causes that didn’t align with my spirit or contribute to my happiness. If anything, some of those businesses contributed to my misery. Now, even though I’m still fighting the good fight, I understand the driving force behind my struggle. I’m finally dedicated to something I believe in, something that makes me truly happy.

To my fellow authors and artists enduring the uphill battle, know that though the road seems lonely at times, there are people out there who understand exactly how tough it is since they’re going through similar trials. When you feel too weary to continue, reflect on how far you’ve already come. Just by taking that first step toward your goal, you’ve traversed onto a path only the strongest dare to travel. The road will not always be smooth, but the journey will become more manageable once you break it down into simple steps. After all, marathons are won with one step at a time.

Knife: Indian Summer

My husband Max recently completed his finest and most complex knife project to date. The initial concept was sketched out in September 2011 and the final touches were completed over this past weekend. All that’s left for him to do is to sharpen the blade and make the leather case. The custom designed Damascus steel blade was heat treated to bring out the intricate mosaic pattern. The handle is made from mammoth ivory and the circular accent is a semi-translucent mother of pearl. Truly an outstanding job! For half a year I watched this masterpiece take shape and was proud to provide some assistance along the way (albeit very little). I’m extremely proud of Max and all he’s accomplished! Well done, honey!

Back to the drawing pad…

It’s been awhile since the last time I sketched anything (at least one year), but I recently finished a drawing that marked the end of my hiatus. I hope to produce more sketches and paintings soon—schedule permitting. I look forward to sharing them with you all. For now, here’s my latest (click the image for a larger view):

Fresh Hell – Season Two

Comedy and Tragedy are commonly viewed as the polar extremes that mark life’s ultimate contrast of joy and despair. Although I have more of a flair for writing the dramatic, I have an appreciation for humor and how tricky it can be to execute. It takes remarkable skill to extract amusement from an otherwise tragic situation and that’s precisely what Brent Spiner and his supporting cast have achieved in Fresh Hell—now in its second season. The premise of the series is based on a celebrity’s shameful fall from grace (a frequent occurrence nowadays), but it also transcends the realm of wild celebrity debacle and touches upon a deeper issue to which the public can relate.

At some point or another, one finds him or herself at a crossroads where they’ve become obsolete or is faced with a drastic decline in fortune. The past few years have proven how scarily delicate the state of financial and social stability can be and that all can be lost practically overnight. From there on out, they find themselves at the precipice of the unknown, which is a disheartening and frustrating position to be in. Furthermore, they find themselves in a state of desperation as they grasp for the dissipating remnants of their former glory, often resorting to activities they’d otherwise dismiss.

The perseverance of Brent’s character not only presents a message of fortitude and dogged determination, it also makes way for an endless possibility of encounters with some rather colorful people. If I had to guess, I’d say that his hell is the fact that no matter how hard he tries to convey his perception of the depth of his craft, nearly everyone around him seems unwilling—or unable—to understand. Even so, there is an ironic twist which hints that there’s at least one person with whom he can identify on some level. Suddenly, he finds himself compelled to save more than just his career.

Fresh Hell delivers a poignant message enshrouded in a quirkiness that offsets the presence of what, for most, is a very serious reality. In fact, I’m not sure if this could be executed in any other way without losing the comedic element.

There’s a possibility I’m reading too much into the premise, but I think it reflects something that I’ve been pondering for quite awhile. Over the years I’ve seen a steepening decline in the quality of entertainment as well as the definition of celebrity. At one time, talent was a primary part of the criteria, aside from image. Now, in order to become famous, talent is no longer the ultimate deciding factor, nor is moral depth. In fact, quite the opposite is celebrated along with bad behavior. As a result, the most popular forms of entertainment—reality television especially—is loaded with superficiality, overindulgence and sexual objectification. This leads me to wonder if, perhaps, the risqué content in Fresh Hell was added as a bold statement in response to this growing issue.

The cast seems more comfortable in their roles since season one. Additionally, the series promises to deliver special treats in the form of celebrity guests and interesting plot developments. It’ll be interesting to see how the Fresh Hell storyline continues to unfold. I can only hope that others will keep an open mind and realize that there’s more to this series than the frivolity that coats the surface.

Brief Update & A Great Review

My schedule has been pretty hectic lately, but I’m finally getting back to planning, plotting and researching for my 3rd and 4th novels. I’ve already accumilated over 100 pages of notes and scenes and I look forward to getting everything finalized so I can begin the writing process with full force.

Meanwhile, I just received this fantastic review of CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil:

“This deviates a bit from my preferred genre. However, I was gifted this book by being chosen as a GoodReads contest winner. I will never turn down a book handed to me. That being said, I just finished reading this book and I was pondering how I would review this book as I descended the stairs to go enjoy a cigarette. One word came to mind.. “Genius!” The author of this book is so well-rounded. I feel as if I’ve built a close relationship with each character in her cleverly-written story. I even find myself pondering the good that may have been found had the “antagonist” lived in different circumstances. This book is a treasure that can easily tease the mind into considering our own coexistent world. I completely adore what Mrs. Shykia Bell was able to paint with her literary brush!” ~Johnathan (via GoodReads)

Important Announcement: Incorrect Info/NOOK files on BN.com

At present, there is NO NOOK edition of CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil! The item Barnes & Noble has listed on their website is actually the NOOK edition of my first novel, Camileon (published 2008). Additionally, the product description of CAMILEON: Beyond The Veil on the Barnes & Noble page is also incorrect since the site has somehow substituted the synopsis with that of Camileon. I’m working feverishly to resolve the issue, but since both books were produced by different publishers, that hasn’t been easy and B&N seems to be passing the buck. To purchase any of my books, I recommend Amazon, since the site has all my information listed correctly and the ebook files for both novels are also correct. I’ll post an update once this situation is resolved, but based on what I’ve been told, that could be up to two weeks from now.
